A Collaboration of Care and Cultural Exchange

Overview of the Mission

From February 2-7, a dedicated team from Global Healing Hands embarked on a medical mission at Mittaphab Hospital in Laos. The team was comprised of three surgeons, Dr. Starnes, Dr. Angotti, and Dr. Makethy, who joined from Cambodia, as well as nine other volunteers from across the United States.

Medical Achievements

During the mission, the team successfully performed five thyroid procedures and assisted local staff with laparoscopic general cases. They also observed orthopedic trauma cases, sharing their expertise and knowledge with the local medical community. The local staff at Mittaphab Hospital played a crucial role in the mission’s success, providing exceptional support and accommodations.

Community Engagement

The team brought joy to children in and visiting the hospital by handing out goodie packages, which were met with smiles and gratitude. In a gesture of appreciation and camaraderie, Dr. Starnes hosted a celebratory dinner at Le Seine restaurant on Wednesday, inviting local physicians to join the festivities. On Thursday, the hospital staff honored the visiting team with a ceremony, presenting them with gifts, certificates, and a special lunch.

Historical Context of Laos

Laos, officially known as the Lao People's Democratic Republic, is a landlocked country in Southeast Asia with a rich cultural history. It was once part of the ancient kingdom of Lan Xang, which was known as the "Land of a Million Elephants." The country has a diverse heritage influenced by its neighbors, including Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, and China. Laos gained independence from French colonial rule in 1953 and has since developed a unique cultural and historical identity.

Preparation and Coordination

Dr. Starnes worked tirelessly for a year, coordinating with Lao officials to gain approval for the mission. This dedication made the mission one of the few medical trips permitted in the country, highlighting the significance and impact of the endeavor.

Looking Ahead

Global Healing Hands is enthusiastic about the future of their relationship with Laos and looks forward to many more missions. The success of this trip has set a strong foundation for continued collaboration and growth, promising greater healthcare advancements and cultural exchanges in the years to come.
