Our inaugural surgical residency scholarship program was awarded to Charles Tumwesige this spring, unanimously agreed upon by our board of directors.
We feel that Charles emulates the kind of surgical resident that we had in mind when this scholarship was originally conceptualized.
He was brought to our attention by Dr. Colin Meghoo, a colleague that has been instrumental in Ugandan medical surgical education over the past year with the support of Global Healing Hands and had also spent a month at Kabale University Medical Center with Charles.
Charles is a native of Western Uganda, one of seven children growing up in a region where a majority of the population is underserved by medical professionals, many unable to afford basic services or surgery if available. This first hand insight ignited a passion in him that he has used to drive and further his education to levels many only dream of in his country. He hopes that someday, healthcare is not available only to the privileged but to all.
We are delighted to welcome Charles to our Global Healing Hands family.
